“The Intern Buzz”

We asked our summer intern to summarize her work experience at Smith Whiley & Company. We also threw her some unexpected questions to see how she really felt.

Here's what she said:

To be an intern at Smith Whiley & Company means to jump, head first, into a world full of discipline, work ethic, drive and professionalism. Luckily, the office is nowhere near as uptight as it could be, and that is what allows people to get their jobs done efficiently and very well. Everyone is intent on teaching you something to help you along the way. There isn't one employee of the Company from whom I haven’t learned something. I've been able to sit in on Investment Committee meetings, go to the ACG Growth Conference in Boston twice, visit the Evanston office, and so much more.

My typical day in the office involves analyzing deals, working on projects, putting together presentations with the CEO/President and the Senior Managing Director, and meeting with the Investment Committee. The most exciting part is being able to look at deals with people and to discuss them in the Investment Committee meetings. It's fun to be in the know, especially in such a prestigious line of work.

What is your favorite thing about Smith Whiley & Company?

I don't have favorite "things," I have favorite people—and that's pretty much everyone. The people here genuinely care about you and want you to become someone successful. They really want to be a part of that. I've had jobs at other places where the work atmosphere was very negative and it felt like people were just waiting for me to fail. That's not the case here, and it definitely keeps me coming back every year.

What do you hope to add to Smith Whiley & Company?

I would like to be the fresh breeze of the Company with the drive and enthusiasm to keep everyone on their toes. I want to put all of my energy into helping to take the Company to the next level, whatever that entails.

What have you learned at Smith Whiley & Company and how will that help you later on in life?

I honed all of my analytical and marketing skills at Smith Whiley. I also learned all of my business etiquette here. I've been able to shadow almost everyone in the Hartford office at one point or another and I've picked up a few things here and there. Since I plan to open a private practice, everything I've mentioned will help me and I know that I have made long-term relationships with everyone here, so if I have any questions down the line, I'm coming to them above anyone else.

If you had to, would you do it all over again?

In a heartbeat.
